Now, I may not be tight with the Lord but I think as a fairly person who is fairly apathetic about religion, perhaps I could speak more reasonably about this judgement day drama.
Forget the poor and homeless, who squat in tent villages (if they are lucky) and back alleys, forget Japan. With only five days left until "Judgement Day" on May 21, the Lord intended that all of his messengers spend money on billboards and vans to promote the upcoming event.
In fact all of those Harold Camping followers who are so nonchalantly self-advertising their religion and brown-nosed tactics, are those who deserve to be judged, EVERDAY.
In what religion, nevermind what they claim theirs to believe in, does it advocate for people to educate their "helpless" (since non-believers are staying here to deal with 5 months on purgatory, and those who are to be saved will die immediately) on an event in which they can do nothing about. I mean, if I don't believe in that faith, I am doomed to live in HELL and if I do, I can skip jail and go directly to heaven?
So, what exactly, is the point? Awareness typically serves the purpose of expression for the reason that you can help inform others to make better choices (i.e. drug campaigns). In this scenario, according to this whack ball, there are no choices, we are all doomed. So, then I ask, what is the point?
I can come up with a few ideas, though none make the purpose any more clear to myself:
1) Brown-nosing/school recess behavior - these people want to show their less fortunate counterparts that because of their religion and behavior, they are saved (figuratively) and they want to make sure the Lord knows they have been prepared
2) Increase participation/membership in whatever crazy faith they are all a part of. They are so crazy - I don't know what church it is and would refuse to mention it if I did know because I have no desire to help this cause. In other words, a good old scare tactic marketing campaign. Someone check numbers, I would bet their followers have gone up significantly since this looney came out with his theory.
Funny thing is, neither of these reasons seem to fit what everyone else (regardless of religion) was brought up to know about the Lord. None of us learned in our Sunday school classes that the Lord hoped that we could one day use our money to scare people into joining a faith or to poke fun at those who didn't achieve what we did.
I would think that if we all only had one week or less to live, he/she would hope that we would use our money to help the less fortunate live a comfortable few days i.e. feed the homeless, give someone shelter, go to Japan to help, etc.
Never, did any religion I've ever heard of emphasize the use of money for pointless mocking and self-promotion. This is why these folks, regardless of when the world ends, should have the judgement placed on them. Today, tomorrow, May 21 and everyday after that.
